CLINICAL SCIENCE
09/2016 – 11/2016: I worked with Dr. Michael Thorpy at the Montefiore Medical Center on a study to better diagnose patients with narcolepsy and cataplexy. While at Montefiore, I worked on this article about the role of reactive astrogliosis in epilepsy.
10/2014 – 02/2016: I worked with epileptologists at the Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group on the following projects:
10/2015 - 12/2015: With Dr. Siddharth Shah at Pediatric Neurology Clinic in Ahmedabad, India, I was involved in two projects:
10/2014 – 02/2016: I worked with epileptologists at the Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group on the following projects:
- Worked on projects investigating aspects of genetic sequencing in treatment-resistant epilepsy, subarachnoid hemorrhage, psychogenic non-epileptic seizure, and issues specific to women with epilepsy.
- Conducted four clinical trials for adults and children with epilepsy - including the administration of Epidiolex (cannabidiol) [CBD] to treat rare, severe forms of epilepsy: this therapy was approved by the FDA for individuals with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome in 2018.
- Worked with more than 100 patients and caregivers on study protocols.
- Worked with medical science liaisons and sponsoring companies to ensure study compliance.
- Established the Brain Tumor-related Epilepsy Research Consortium; developed Consortium website.
- Using next generation genetic sequencing in children with treatment-resistant epilepsy (link).
- Ictal and non-ictal patterns in subarachnoid hemorrhage: is it a seizure or is it vasospasm (link).
- Epilepsy and reproductive issues in women of Hispanic origin living in United States (link).
- Incidence and predictors of early and late onset seizures after subarachnoid hemorrhage (link).
- Cognitive differences between psychogenic non-epileptic seizure patients with and without alexithymia (link).
10/2015 - 12/2015: With Dr. Siddharth Shah at Pediatric Neurology Clinic in Ahmedabad, India, I was involved in two projects:
- A questionnaire-based study where I asked parents of children with epilepsy where they get information about their child’s condition. One of the gaps in care that emerged was that there was many parents, especially from rural areas were not aware of their child's condition, and that culturally-sensitive information in local languages could go a long way to increase awareness.
- I wrote a proposal to investigate specific genes involved in benign non-familial seizures (see attached).
