Introduction to Indian Music at the Y!My gurus Smt. Maheshwari Nagarajan and Smt. Vanitha Jayan of Nritya Kala Kendra, Ahmedabad have always told us that a knowledge and appreciation of music is critical for the study of Bharatanatyam. Amma and didi teach us nuances of music and how to accurately recite sollukattu (spoken rhythmic syllables). They also encourage us to listen to music of all kinds, and gain an ear for melody and rhythm. On November 9, musician, historian, and author Kamini Dandapani will come to the YM & YWHA of Washington Heights and Inwood for a lecture/demonstration on Indian music. The goal of this session is to demystify Carnatic music, and to learn how Carnatic music is related to Bharatanatyam.
