Awarded a grant by I'm Still Here Foundation We are excited to announce that as part of The Memory Tree, we have been awarded an "Innovation Grant" from the I'm Still Here Foundation. This work titled "Activating the Mind-Body Connection with Eastern Dance & Art" will engage seniors experiencing early-stage Alzheimer’s disease who live at two Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCs): Morningside Gardens in Harlem and River Terrace in Washington Heights. Sessions will include an introduction to Bharatanatyam and visual art-making, where participants will create hand gestures and other pieces reflecting their dance movements. The culminating event will feature a performance by participants and an exhibit of their artwork. This is the first time that Bharatanatyam is being systematically and intentionally used in individuals with dementia. "I'm Still Here Foundation (ISH) empowers individuals living with dementia to thrive through advocacy and programs that foster connections in arts, culture, and community." More about this project can be found on the "I'm Still Here Foundation (ISH) website here. The Memory Tree is the signature program of the Early Alzheimer’s Foundation Inc, the first in New York City that focuses exclusively on people in the early stage of memory loss.
